About us

PolarXL expedition cruises take you to the best and most pristine areas in the world where you can enjoy the impressive nature and wildlife.
With almost 300 departures to polar regions every year, PolarXL can also make your trip of a lifetime happen.

Because of years of experience with expedtion cruises we at PolarXL know the answer to this question is easy:
Almost anybody can join one of our cruises. Our youngest polar explorer was 7 years old and our oldest one 88 years old and both of them had the best trip of their life...
Your fellow travellers on board consist of a mixed group of adventurous and flexible travellers looking to see who want to experience the polar regions first hand. Many of our travellers are between 45 and 65 years old, but you will also find there are plenty of older and younger travellers from several different countries on board.
You do not need to be in super shape to join our cruises. A doctor is alway present on board and the ship has a pharmacy with the most common medication in stock.

You will be staying in comfortable cabins, almost all of them with a direct view of the sea. The facilities on board vary from ship to ship; lectures (free of charge) are available on every cruise, given by professional guides who will tell you more about their specialty: be it the history of the region, wildlife, birds, geologie etc.
All meals are included on every voyage. It is possible to take several preferences and diets into account, including gluten free and vegetarian meals.
The language on board is English, with some German and Dutch language departures available. On several cruises PolarXL has their own, multilingual guide on board.

Your expedition cruise is all about enjoying nature, the scenery and the abundant wildlife in the polar regions. During every cruise we go ashore several times a day, or we cruise between the icebergs in zodiacs (small rubberboats we use to get off the ship). On some departures helicopter flights are also included; activities such as kayakking, camping, photo workshops or scuba diving may also be available.

To join one of our cruises you do not need special or expensive extra clothing. The clothing you would use at home during winter in Europe or North America is normally all you need. Although it can be cold at times, it's probably not as cold as you would expect.
We plan our cruises during the warmer months; these are also the months with regular sunshine, with temperatures above freezing most of the time!

We will gladly make sure you have the polar cruise of a lifetime. Our team of experienced polar travel experts will make sure you come home with memories that last forever.
PolarXL not only will book your expedition cruise, if you would like we can also book all other aspects of your journey, including flights, hotels, excursions, cancellation insurance etc.

All you need to do is contact PolarXL. We reply promptly to all questions and are happy to take care of your booking. On our website you can find detailed information on the many cruises and ship we offer for polar cruises.

Founder PolarXL
Pieter van der Luit
Pieter van der Luit (1969) first traveled to the Arctic in 1996 and fell in love with polar regions instantly. Since that first journey Pieter has done dozens of expedition cruises, from Spitsbergen to Antarctica, from Kamchatka to Greenland and from New Zealand to numerous desolate islands in the Pacific and Atlantic Ocean. Pieter is considered to be one of the most knowledgeable people on expedition cruises and traveling in polar regions; no wonder when you look at his experience in polar regions! From the PolarXL office in the north of The Netherlands, Pieter is always ready and willing to answer any questions you may have about expedition cruises. That is, if he is not in the Arctic or Antarctic himself...
The website guy
Martijn Bot
Martijn Bot (1977) is up and coming in the polar cruise industry. During his first Antarctic expedition cruise the ice, the wildlife and the scenery put a spell on him. Martijn has been a part of PolarXL from day 1. He not only keeps the PolarXL website up to date, but also translates most of the itineraries, checks prices and other information from the ships' owners and keeps the world informed about reduced rates, discounts and specials. Apart from working for PolarXL, Martijn also owns Birding Holland, a company that guides visiting birders through The Netherlands. Martijns superior communication skills can be followed on the PolarXL Facebook page: www.facebook.com/polarxl
Polar guide
Ab Steenvoorden
Ab Steenvoorden (1968) grew up on the Dutch coast. His youth in a small coastal town in the western part of Holland has given Ab a strong fascination fro the sea; so strong even that he has been a member of Royal Netherlands Sea Rescue Institution on board one of their rescue vessels for over 10 years. These days you can still find Ab close to the sea, but usually a bit further away from home than the North Sea. As a polar guide he not only joins expedtion cruises to the Antarctic and Spitsbergen, but as a birding and wildlife expert Ab can often be found on board PolarXL cruises sharing his passion for birds and cetaceans with our travellers. Finding Polar Bears is just another day at the office for Ab!
